چکیده

A quantum yield of •i•e = 2.3 x 10 '4 (+_ 4 X 10 -•) was determined for the photochemical degradation of 4nitrophenol over the wavelength range of 300 to 370 nm in ice pellets (pH 5.6). Five reaction products were identified: hydroquinone, benzoquinone, 4-nitrosophenol, nitrate, nitrite, and the likely formation of organic polymers. The similarities of these results to the observations from 4-nitrophenol photolysis in aqueous solutions indicate that similar mechanisms are operative in both phases. The photochemical decomposition of 4-nitrophenol under conditions similar to those in polar snow and ice suggests that other direct and indirect photochemical process can occur in the polar ice/snow during spring and summer.

Participation of the Halogens in Photochemical Reactions in Natural and Treated Waters.

Halide ions are ubiquitous in natural waters and wastewaters. Halogens play an important and complex role in environmental photochemical processes and in reactions taking place during photochemical water treatment. While inert to solar wavelengths, halides can be converted into radical and non-radical reactive halogen species (RHS) by sensitized photolysis and by reactions with secondary reacti...

Organics in environmental ices: sources, chemistry, and impacts

The physical, chemical, and biological processes involving organics in ice in the environment impact a number of atmospheric and biogeochemical cycles. Organic material in snow or ice may be biological in origin, deposited from aerosols or atmospheric gases, or formed chemically in situ. In this manuscript, we review the current state of knowledge regarding the sources, properties, and chemistr...

Effect of photochemical ageing on the ice nucleation properties of diesel and wood burning particles

A measurement campaign (IMBALANCE) conducted in 2009 was aimed at characterizing the physical and chemical properties of freshly emitted and photochemically aged combustion particles emitted from a log wood burner and diesel vehicles: a EURO3 Opel Astra with a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) but no particle filter and a EURO2 Volkswagen Transporter TDI Syncro without emission aftertreatment. Ic...

Photochemical degradation of azure-b with sulphate radical ion generated by peroxydisulphate ion with cupric ion

In this paper, the photochemical degradation of azure-b by Cu2+/S2O82− process has beenpresented. Cu2+ as photocatalyst and S2O82− ion as photooxidant used in this process. Atextremely low concentrations, cupric ion showed true catalytic activity in the overall process. The influence of various parameters on the performance of the treatment process has beenconsidered, such as pH, concentration o...
